The Joplin Golf Foundation Board of Directors is proud to announce the recipients of the 2017 Horton Smith Scholarships. These four outstanding young men and women have displayed an aptitude for golf as well as excellence in academics. The Joplin Golf Foundation hosted the Inaugural Horton Smith Invitational at Schifferdecker Golf Course on April 10th.  Area High School golf teams were invited to the event as an opportunity to showcase the talent level of all high school play from Class 1 to Class 4. Seniors in the event submitted an essay describing what golf means to them. The combination of the essay, golf achievements and academic achievements were used as criteria for selection. Congratulations to the recipients for their hard work in the class room and on the course.

Joplin Golf Foundation 2017 Scholarship WinnersJohn Quitno is a senior from Nevada High School. Number 1 in his class of 173. John holds several records in golf for Nevada High School. John was All Conference, All District and a State Qualifier all four years in golf.

Joplin Golf Foundation 2017 Scholarship WinnersKatie Kolczun is a Senior from Thomas Jefferson High School. Katie is a National Honor Society Member. Katie was Captain of the Thomas Jefferson Golf Team. Katie was Co-Captain of the Tennis Team. Other activities include Varsity Cheerleading, Upper School Musical with chorus and lead roles in Bye Bye Birdie, Legally Blonde, Guys and Dolls and Fiddler on the Roof.

Joplin Golf Foundation 2017 Scholarship WinnersParker Tankersley is a senior from Webb City High School. Parker is a National Honor Society Member. Parker was a three-year varsity member. Parker qualified for Sectionals twice as well as a District Medalist one time. Parker was an active member in Science Club, Spanish Club as well as participating in writing and drafting competitions. Parker was an active participant in the PALS organization and the Hi-Step program.

Joplin Golf Foundation 2017 Scholarship WinnersDustin Sommer is a senior from Sarcoxie High School. Dustin was a varsity golf member all four years. Dustin was the team Captain his sophomore through senior year. Dustin was a Sectional qualifier on two occasions. Dustin was ranked 5/54 in his class. Dustin earned academic honors all four years. Dustin earned two state medals in FBLA and one state medal in DECA.
